                  History

The National Black Boys Can Association grew out of the work of an innovative local project based in the Acocks green area of Birmingham. The project was started by a group of four concerned Black professionals from a Black majority church, in response to a clearly identified need for some form of intervention to redress the situation.

The local project, named Black Boys Can, was initially set up as a six weeks summer holiday programme, targeting Black boys between the ages of 9 - 16. Despite the fact that some of the 25 boys who initially registered on the project were reluctant to join, not only did the project have a 95% retention rate, but at the end of the six weeks programme, all the boys voted for the continuation of the project. The organisers chose to respond to the demands of the boys, which eventually led to the formulation of a longer-term project.

Interest in the project came not only from the boys but also from the press. This culminated in a front-page article in the Times Education Supplement in 2002. This exposure created a huge demand for the services of the organisation, testifying to the need for an organization that is vibrant, bold and progressive with the credibility and track record for making a difference to the lives of Black boys. Again the Directors of the organisation responded to the challenge of expanding its services geographically. The approach it took was to set up a Franchise operation, empowering local communities around the country to run their own Black Boys Can projects.

The National Black Boys Can Association was officially launched in 2002 by Sir Bill Morris, the Patron of the Association. Since then it has grown from strength to strength and has gained credibility amongst all its major stakeholders.
